Colorado makes grocery stores have a separate store for liquor, wine and beer. It usually is just a little room off the side of the store and has a checkout counter in it. I think you can even take the beer/ wine/liquor off the shelf and walk into the grocery store with it and pay at the grocery checkout. I guess they can close the doors at times when its not legal to sell alcohol.

There was a previous post that got it right, but there are some additional restrictions:

A publicly traded company cannot sell liquor (why Wal-Mart, Target, most grocery stores cannot sell hard liquor - only beer and wine)
You cannot sell liquor and weapons in the same location (Wal-Mart, etc)
Hours vary based on the county/city
No liquor sales on Sunday
Only beer and wine can be sold after Noon on Sunday

In some of the more rural areas, there are still clubs. In the major metro areas they are pretty much gone. In the DFW area there are several cities that are still dry.

There are a couple of Albertsons in Baton Rouge that are the same way.

This is because they used the same layout as all national Aalbertsons when they first came here.

TX has been an eye opener. I love that a grocery store can't sell liquor, but the liquor store attached to it can. What is that stopping? And beer and wine are okay, but liquor is off limits unless you go to another store. They can all get you to the same place, so whats the difference. My favorite is a liquor store I went to in Addison that had two entrances, one for beer and wine and one for liquor. Like they couldn't mix the two. Whats the point?

Liquor is sold at stores until 9 p.m.

Beer and wine is sold at stores until midnight.

It is physically impossible to restrict liquor sales and sell beer under the same roof. I guess if you could wheel out the display cases, and secure all the bottles from breaking on the ground, you might be able to. But that would be an extreme hardship.

Make sense?

As someone who grew up in Louisiana and is used to buying liquor from every Circle K in town, this shite is weird

You obviously didn't grow up in Leesville or DeRidder then. At least in Texas in the dry areas they sell memberships for restaurants.

DeRidder and I think all of Beauregard Paris are dry or used to be. No memberships - no booze or beer period. Leesville was dry on Sundays. If someone showed up with crawfish on Sunday and you didn't have beer you better know someone who was military and could buy it at the commissary or you would have to drive to Natchitoches.

The busiest Hwy in the state on Friday nights was 171 between Leesville and DeRidder. I have lived in Houston for over 15 years and have never had any trouble getting anything I wanted to drink. Just have to know that liquor stores are closed Sundays. But you can go to a restaurant or bar and buy drinks or shots just like any other day of the week.

Why can't you purchase liquor after 9, but beer is okay until midnight? I'm used to being able to go to the convenient store down the block from my house and buying a fifth of liquor at 3 a.m. if I wanted to. Never did it, but it was perfectly acceptable. It doesn't really affect me, but the thought of it seems so restrictive.

I have been out of the Houston bar scene for quite a while, so I don't know if they still make a distinction between a bar and an Ice House. When I did still haunt those establishments, an Ice House could only sell beer and had to stop selling at midnight. A lot if not all were open air. Usually looked like a bunch of tables in a big garage. Took a while to get used to all of the rules coming from Louisiana in the 70's.
