Probably from a Cadet when LSU was still requiring freshman and sophomores (men) to be a part of the ROTC Corp of the Ole War Skule when it was compulsory prior to 1969.
It was 3,000 strong before it became a volunteer organization.

Now - this is very likely before the Ostwald cap could have been a factor (this picture is 28-29), but look at the up front trombone player - THAT looks reasonably like a gold/silver braid style strap as opposed to the others
I saw this picture and I do believe it's band related. I wonder if there was a cadet band separate from the marching band at some point?

Interesting as someone replied from LSU stating that Ohio St Band still uses the ROTC officer's insignia. So I definitely think this is band related.

General Pershing wearing a similar structured hat during the latter part of World War I. It was a very distinct look.

During World War II, LSU was one of the top four schools producing officers for the U.S. Armed Forces. (The other schools were Texas A&M, West Point, and Annapolis). LSU had more than 5,000 former students serving as officers, including 16 who achieved the rank of Brigadier General or higher.
I wonder if it was from the Officer Training program? I just learned about this yesterday

LSU Military Museum's Director has nothing on this in his LSU ROTC uniforms. LSU archivist at the library is going through the band pictures through the years. I think it's band officer's or Director's cap. Might be earlier than I originally thought but no one has presented a good photo of the band uniforms from 1947-1958. 58 the uniforms were destroyed in a fire. I just can't believe I'd have the only one out there. Someone's got to know. LSU is leaning band but has yet to confirm.

Definitely didn't ignore it. I'm not sure what date that would be? Can't be 1913 nor 2013. Company wasn't in business on either date. If the "1" is the year...what year would that represent?
An April Fools prank
