We already subsidize over 50 million people living here legally.

Why the hell would I wanna subsidize a bunch of people coming here illegally?

I take care of many patients that have parents that were deported back to Mexico, so now they live with other family members. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is all about undocumented round ups out here.

We had a really, really sad case once years ago. Kid was only like 17 and diagnosed with cancer(really far along). He had come by himself over the border and was caught(no idea he was sick) so had no family here. Only contact he could have with them was over the phone. Imagine your child is dying...and you can't even go see them in the hospital.

Don't give me that shite

When Im paying you $3.95 a pound in January, you're paying them $6.50 an hour, and Im still subsidizing them. You learned that UL-L math?

So why didn't he self deport back to Mexico for treatment there and so he could be with his family?

And who paid for his treatment in the US (I know the answer)...

I'm sure they would have let him go back across the border to be with his family

My best friend crossed the border every day to go to private Catholic school in the US. She has no desire to ever be an American.

We had found another hospital in another state with a pediatric oncology unit that was willing to take his case even though he was undocumented(it is very difficult to find oncology care for undocumented children, most of your typical places won't take them). His cancer was far along, but his only shot of possibly living was with treatment. He was very poor so would not have been eligible for treatment in Mexico.

Even though some of us sound like hardass/hardliners sometimes, I do hope your story has a happy ending.

I basically made up my mind sometime around 8th grade I was getting the Frick out of Honduras.
I worked hard in school, got scholarships to LSU, worked hard at LSU, got work visa, then residency, then citizenship....all by the book.

In the meantime I have done my best to assimilate, if I faced any kind of prejudice, I just shook it off and moved along.

I don't blame anybody for trying to make it in the US, but it should be hard to attain the American dream.

I am annoyed by those who complain when it did not work out for them.

I would. It's not their responsibility not to come, it's our responsibility to keep them out.

I do too. But I don't know what happened. On top of everything else...the kid was turning 18 soon...and would be arrested and deported by ICE when that happened. So we were fighting the clock to get the kid transferred into that hospital before that happened. Cause once he was in that program, ICE couldn't touch him. We were just happy for his sake that he got off our floor before his 18th bday. We don't get updates on what happens after that. Wish we did, I have thought about him many times and hoped he was ok.

It's really hard to maintain a stance of "DEPORT THEM ALL!" "ILLEGALS NEED TO GO" when you have to personally deal with situations like that.

Agreed....

But 12 to 15 million of them is kinda crazy.

I agree as well. If the answer was so simple we wouldn't be discussing this right now. Again, I have very mixed views on immigration. Part of being a nurse is having to put aside personal views on politics and social issue and care for each patient equally. Those illegal Mexican kids deserve the same level of care from me as the white boy across the hall from them.

It does piss me off at work when I am caring for a family that speaks no English whatsoever....and they get upset at me cause I don't speak Spanish or try and demand that only nurses that speak Spanish should care for them.
