Let's say a kid needs to take a semester off. GPA still great, etc. Will finish present semester with good grades. Does TOPS just kick back in when they enroll the following semester. I can't find this info anywhere online.

So what happens? They just lose TOPS altogether?

Only if you get a co-op I think. I did this and my tops was just put on hold and picked back up when I went back the next semester.

Would have to take enough hours during the summer semester to reach 24 total hours for the academic year

No.

I would have massively benefited from taking a year off, but TOPS doesn't do that. It's tough for me to complain because I made full use of that entitlement program.

Like posted above, no, without the exemption. With that said, I don't think the exception is that hard to get. I know a couple of people that got it pretty easily.

Depends on the reason. My sister got a co-op at a plant one semester. She was an engineering student and it qualified as an "exceptional educational opportunity." So TOPS put her award on hold until the next semester when she came back. She still got the full eight semesters, just not consecutively.

I know there are exceptions for health things, too.

Basically you can't get the exemption because you need a break, but there are specific reasons you can appeal to have the award put on hold.
