not in the state of Louisiana. they have "Medical Psychologists" that can prescribe some medications.

LINK

If they want to do this they have to have post doctoral master's degree in clinical psychopharmacology. LSU has one. and of course they have to pass a national exam in psychopharmacology.

Well yeah.

You can take it a step further back, too.

Clinical psychology relies on completely subjective groupings of behaviors that create diagnoses. It's very malleable and creates an inception point of subjectivity from the outset.

This sort of issue is not solely found in social sciences, though. Most science devolves back to physics and physics involves a lot of "art", too, at this point. Hell, there are competing major fields of physics that don't completely work together a a unified body, too.

Well and that’s going to be rare to see, because they also typically require 2 to 3 times the clinical hours you would going through as a Psychiatrist just to prescribe. Isn’t really worth it in the end.

In 2015, there was a report that came out showing that over 50% of research in the field of psychology was not reproducible.

A “science” that can’t reproduce its own research?

Behavior, cognition, emotions are contextual.

Positivism struggles with social constructs. Much more difficult reducing people and the situations in which they behave, think and feel to math. Yet, Rest assured, there was more Psychology science at Christmas dinners than not.

Just read OT board that is full of big questions to answer about human behavior, thinking and emotions…crapping on sofas, uncle cut off from alchohol, wife wanting more attention than husbands.

Psychology evidently has more to do than engineering or physics do.

I’m curious though how much of that research can even be replicated from an ethics standpoint. Or are we talking about research that can be replicated ethically?

All that said, there’s been a push to work towards more evidence-based practices in psych. Things that are more easily measurable/replicated in practice and research.

Psych is a relatively young field. So I’m not surprised it’s still in early evolution of practice. I have a couple cohort members who are old enough that they didn’t even have to have a license to initially practice.

rare to see,

I tried to find out, not sure about the merits of this website LINK but they have Louisiana with the most at 114, the next closest state is California with 62 Not sure what that says about the mental health of people in Louisiana, maybe more to do with rural areas without psychiatrists and nobody has a car to drive to big cities for mental health.

Could be a lower threshold for qualification then. I know a lot of psychs here have started utilizing Telehealth services more frequently to reach rural areas.

I want no part of prescribing at this point. That feels like a can of worms I’d want no part of.

As far as behavior is concerned, a person could make you observe anything they wanted you to, right? I think that’s the issue I can’t really reconcile.

My wife is a psychiatrist

She can spot a behavior disorder within a couple minutes. And she can spot someone bullshitting a behavior even faster.

It is really fun to watch, actually
