Sounds like a bearing. Worse case scenario is it comes apart and the wheel falls off or at least destroys the differential. Nothing good. May also be a u joint. Neither are overly difficult to repair or costly, unless it comes apart and then it’s a whole nother issue.

With 110k on it fix it. Those things will run forever.

As J Wade said, start with the tire first. Sometimes a tire noise can be indistinguishable from a bearing noise.

I'm leaning towards a wheel bearing problem.

You nailed the most likely cause and others have pointed out a total failure of a wheel bearing can result in the wheel separating from the car.

There are other possibilities like an issue with the differential but unlikely to be a balance issue or a brake issue since you would have probably felt and heard different symptoms.

Fantastic car. Back in the day when Ford didn't make garbage

Facts. Has a STRONG cult following….folks in the know will pay A BUNCH for the right ones but all of them are about bulletproof. I sold one 3 years ago….2010….,for $15k. It only had 60k on it. I bought it from a family friend in 2016 and it had 6400 miles on it. $7k. Put a set of tires on it because of age and drove it 54000 miles and got paid $8000 for my trouble. If had an ignition short in it when he bought it and I had hunted and hunted it….he knew what was wrong with it and it had me whipped. He offered me $15k and I nearly broke his arm off LOL. He fixed it and drives it daily. It was pristine when I bought it and is nearly so today….i saw him just a few weeks ago in it.

Axle bearing, I'd bet. Common issue with the panther platform.

another vote for wheel bearing. i had one go out on the causeway about six months ago. fortunately i was able to get to a crossover before total failure. really irritating because i had taken to my regular mechanic THAT VERY MORNING and told him i was hearing a soft sound from my wheel, and he told me he was certain it was just my tires, which were wearing a little unevenly. guess who is no longer my regular mechanic?

sometimes, if it's a bearing, you can hear it get louder if you change lanes because it shifts the amount of weight on that wheel.

but like others have said, bearings only get worse with time, and total failure comes with some pretty significant collateral damage. just take it in.

Yes, having served in the U.S Army Infantry, I have used these a lot. I used my Iphone charger and charged them for 17 hours. Bright as a light now!

Having been in the taxi cab and transportation business I have grown quite fond of these cars. Shame they discontinued them after the 2011 models. This the 5th one I've owned. Comfortable, decent power for a heavy everyday driver, built bulletproof, easy to work own and parts are cheaper than ever. I got this one from a one owner who maintained it well, had all the records and even the original sticker. She only had 88K on her when I got her.

I beg to differ. I had a early 99's Ford tempo that was a piece of garbage

Mom has a 2003 Grand Marquis.
Her car makes a rumbling noise between 40 mph and 60 mph, kind of like running over a rumble strip on the edge of the highway.
My mechanic diagnosed it as torque converter shudder. Transmission shop will service trans, flush and refill trans with fluid and filter for $250. May help it, may not. If it doesn’t help, was told $1800 for a transmission rebuild.
