Kid abuse to me is the worst, but this country could really take a look at how we view our penal system.
well my post above is about treating the issues that arise BEFORE something like abuse occurs. he needs to be punished for what he did. i just think that he (and the vast majority of people in our criminal system) can be led off the path that is taking them to the societal disruptive behavior

At least they only have like a 10% recidivism rate though.
yeah our system is terrible at this. we don't just punish the people for their crime, we make them wear scarlet letters. plus jail itself puts the people even further behind normal society and often causes even more psychological trauma. it all but guarantees recidivism and it does guarantee the destruction of the criminal's economic potential

There is no rehabilitation in prison. All prison does is turn you into a more knowledgeable criminal with more and better contacts.

VOLTA. It's the name of his dog. I ran into him the week he got it.
Also, has anyone linked to any past Ron Ware rulings? This one is my favorite:
WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES: The horrific third-degree burns inflicted on two-year-old boy by foster mom who scolded him with boiling water - but ESCAPED jail

What other results would you expect in a, largely, for-profit industry?

It's just a fact that some people need to be removed from society. There's no helping them. Other people can benefit from rehab programs, but not some.
I guess all you can do in those situations is to hope they frick up in prison and get stuck in there, or get so institutionalized that they can't function for longer than a week in society when they get out. Then, unfunctional people get returned to where they belong

ok, that is what I am referring to. It is about the money they can make by keeping people in jail with the gubment passing stupid shite like 3 strike laws.
They've gotten the American public to eat that shite up too. Just lock em all away forever, at a cost of $30k/yer per inmate ;)

i agree but even then, though are people with severe psychological disorders

the whole point is to identify other psychological issues that work on them before the person acts out and falls victim to the issue
this is more than just drugs. jerad fogle has a fricked up brain and if he was put through the right therapy i guarantee you he doesn't act out. drugs and addiciton are the biggie. we have chosen to ignore the issue of our psychological predispositions and the effects of drugs and would rather ignore it and just try to punish people caught with drugs. that system is how normal guys turn out to be chad daigle.
there are also societal factors, and i mean small society. cultcha, lower class mentality, trash culture, whatever you want to call it. many kids are simply never given a chance to ever function normally b/c the adults around them are complete pieces of shite. if we learned to identify these issues sooner we would eliminate hundreds of thousands of criminals by "fixing" them and educating them before crimes are ever committed

quote:You know you can't guarantee that. So...shock therapy? A stern talking to? Inpatient? Outpatient? How long does this go on, and who pays for it? Who stops him from doing what he does while in treatment? He's where he belongs, and can't touch children there

i didn't say that. it just returns the issue back to psychological problems. people with severe mental illness do need to be removed from society, but it gets difficult. some people can function with schizophrenia pretty well like 90% of the time, but 10% of the time it's difficult. then there are less threatening disorders that still somewhat remove people from society, like autism. you may be imprisoning them, too. it's not a clear line with the extreme cases
