"For profit" companies can do rescue work too, and nonprofits can make a profit. The difference is that you can't invest in a nonprofit in return for a share of the money they do make.
The real problem is that with either one you have little to no assurance a donation will go to what you think it will.
So donate to either - but be sure they get audited.
