Cajun Navy - In crises such as Harvey, you want outdoorsmen on your side

At a time such as this, you want the guys who can still thread a line when their hands are wet and cold. They’re descending on Houston in their fleets of flat-bottomed aluminum boats, the sport fishermen and duck hunters outnumbering the government rescuers by the hundreds, their skiffs sitting low in the floodwaters with their human catch in the back, clutching plastic-wrapped possessions.
The country is suddenly grateful for this “Cajun Navy,” for their know-how, for the fact that they can read a submerged log in the water, and haul their boats over tree stumps and levees and launch them from freeway junctions. There are no regulators to check their fishing licenses or whether they have a fire extinguisher and life preservers on board, which they don’t. They’re used to maneuvering through the cypress of Caddo Lake or the hydrilla and coontail of the Atchafalaya, where the water might be four feet or it might rise to 18, and the stinking bog is called “coffee grinds” because of the way boots sink in it. Spending hours in monsoon rains doesn’t bother them, because they know ducks don’t just show up on a plate, and they’ve learned what most of us haven’t, that dry comfort is not the only thing worth seeking.

Sorry, don't really think it is that long. IMO it is a good account of those that actually go into harms way and help folks in need. I will find a link for it.

It's people profiting off the good will of others. People down here have been doing those things in major storms and floods forever.
The cajun navy thing isnt the most horrible thing because it gives the attention whores cause to help when they otherwise wouldn't have. I does disgust me to see people whoring for attention just for doing the right thing

Posted this on another CN thread but it fits hear too....Kinda over the Cajun Navy now. They now have filed 503c. Are excepting government aid and can no longer just "go help people" They have to be dispatched and work along side the authorities with permissions. That wasn't what a bunch of us signed up for. We just wanted to show up, loosely coordinate and help as much and as fast as possible. During Harvey last year they probably didn't help half the people they said they did. Locals did a lot of the work while they piled up in front of a camera and took credit. Bunch of us that stopped associating with them done so much more and could get things to folks so much quicker. Noticed they are kinda turning into glory hounds and polo shirt, high end flip flop wearing, new boat pulling, baws looking for a camera to get in front of while they launch there boat in the ditch. If you look in the background of those reports and pics. That's us still helping folks. just saying truth hurts. Its now a business with bank accounts and begging for donations (which people do need) in front of Academy when the government has kicked in big dollars for them to purchase those supplies. Want be long they will have stores open like Goodwill. I can see it now. (Cajun Navy Rescue Depot). There where hundreds maybe even thousand or 2 boats and trucks in Lake Charles (waiting for orders). No one needs to give you an order, launch your boat get in the neighbor hoods and help.
