Static line. The SOSBN had such heavy individual loads to jump they never used the doors. Always over the ramp. Only got to jump with them once.

Oh well though, I was there in December and did 12 lifts in one day. 600+ jumpers and a personal record for me. Sometimes you're the bug, others you're the windshield. I love that mission.
I need to go out to the bleachers at Fryar and see it from the ground.

The extra step is nice. I had three jumps from a C130 and two from a C17 at Airborne school. My risers never twisted on the C17 which I attribute to the extra step.

Out of pure curiosity from an aircrew perspective, what extra step? I'm not super familiar with back-end operations during personnel drops.
I obviously don't get feedback from jumpers as they're gone by the time I get the chance to ask how it went. Wolfhound is the closest to that I've ever had.

The C-17 that was there had a fire alarm at their hotel the night before and couldn't fly per their home station so it was all on us that day. Like I said, I love that mission and could do it every day.
The JM's were giving me shite saying they saw a 130 crew do a full lift of mass exit in 10 minutes and 30 something seconds. We did mostly sub 11 minute lifts that day, but I couldn't break the record.

Totally a training environment scenario. The baws at Benning are good with like a 2 minute slowdown.
Also, just to confirm. You didn't jump from a 130 in early October of 2019 did you? I did a whole stick of O-6s at a sunny locale in central Florida around that time.

My training/memory is 20 years old so hopefully still accurate, but I am referring to the last step in the picture on the first page of this post. Compared to the C130, the last step of the C17 seemed to be slightly outside the silhouette of the plane. This was discussed among the paratroopers and was something the Sr. Jumpmasters tried to prepare us for beforehand. The experience I recall was not feeling the wind draft for a split second longer out of the C17 compared to the C130.

Considered asking if I could jump in permissive status with SOCOM (they are right across the bay from me) for my retirement in May but the decision has to go all the way up to the Army Reserve CG. Not interested in the hassle.

Your memory is still pretty good. The difference between the two is that the C130 has no air deflector to give you a clean exit. It is built into the C17. That and the larger jump platform.

Ok, just went back and looked at it. The 17 jump platforms look a lot different than ours. I had never noticed that until your post. The 130 has air deflector doors, but I've had more than one loadmaster tell me they don't do shite to push the air away from the para-troop doors. Interesting, thanks

See my previous post. The 130 has air deflector doors, but I'm piecing together that they don't do much for jumpers.

You are kicking to untangle them for the first few seconds until they pop straight. Until you get that resolved you have no control over your canopy. Not a good feeling.
The 130 has air deflector doors...
