Do the prices of sporting event tickets on websites and apps such as StubHub, SeatGeek, and GameTime typically get cheaper the closer to the date of the game or not?

On higher demand events, no.

Doesn't matter -the ridiculous fees those platforms charge will make up the difference anyway.
I try to go through private sellers if the event is local.

Depends a lot on the event and venue. For instance playoff games, as soon as they go on sale every reseller picks them up for box office price and tries to make a profit. Hours before the event as they are still holding the tickets prices drop as there are no butts to put in the seats if they don't sell.

Generally not for events worth going to.
