Buying used or new, buy a commercial grade one. I bought a 5 year old commercial grade zero turn in 2011 for $1900 and it's been great. Well worth the money. Will last me 10 more years.

Did you buy yours from a small motor repair shop or from a private seller?

I hate doing it. But I love once I'm done, I stand there looking at it like a retard.

Something about plugging in the headphones, tuning out of all forms of communication, and getting to cut neat lines like a zen garden is relaxing to me. Top it all with a Corona and lime and some nice weather, and we are talking

You want a homeowner's model. Buy new for the warranty. Buy from a dealer or hardware store that services what they sell.
Most major brands are making good homeowner models in that price range; X Mark, Gravely, etc. All mowers eventually need repairs.
Engine and spindles are the most important part of the mower. Change oil and filters every 40-50 hours and blow grass from deck when done cutting.
Caution: if dealer sees you using homeowner model in any yard other than your own, or you accidentally tell them this, your warranty is void.

Engine most likely had been replaced. Still could be a decent option. Most commercial grade engines are good for at least 2,000 hours, if you've done proper maintenance. Cutting all day, five days a week, I can put 2,000 hours on a mower in 3/4 years.

mid grade trim level is probably preferential for residential lawns

Is this statement referencing the height you should cut the grass? Depends on the grass. Some grasses can be cut shorter, Bahia, Bermuda ( 2 in. or shorter). Some grasses don't like to be cut short (St. Augustine), and doing so will cause bare spots to develop.
Adjust deck height to where you're cutting no more than half the length of the blade of grass.

As little as possible. I feel like I am at a car dealership right now.

Been there and done that. My yard is over 4 ac now. From ride mowers, using a tractor with a finishing mower, I had enough. Really depends on your yard size and if you have gates to go thru. Base your buy on that, BUT, stay away from big box stores.

My Bad Boy cost me 5K after taxes. Told the wife we should just fence everything in, get a shite load of goats. Good thing about that 5K, it was well spent. The wife cuts the yard about 95% of the time. She loves doing it.

Take all the shock absorption out of the seat. You won't be able to get her off the thing.

I bought my from a craigslist ad actaully, but was only looking at commercial grade used mowers. You could likely find used ones at small engine shops for sale though.

Mine was a SnapperPro, 19hp Kawasaki, 48" cut 3 blades. It's been rock solid now for 6 years, the only thing I have done is replaced and sharpened blades, and annual oil changes.

I bought an exmark quest ...

I'd buy a hustler if I had to again. They are very nice machines.
