Should I trade in my current car, or sell it outright?

Sell it on your own is always the correct answer

Make sure to look into the sales tax deduction you get when trading before you make a decision

Not if the tax deduction outweighs or even equals the difference you would make selling it.

Compare the value of the private sale + the hassle trying to find a buyer vs a dealer trade in.

The tax credit on a trade in is valuable, but you are also entitled to that credit on a private sale. I believe there are other ways to receive it, but the easiest way is to process the paperwork for the private sale at the dealership at the same time as the new purchase. I’ve see it called a “Quick Trade” or “In and Out Trade”.
