Actually, the sales guy called it an "investment" but in reality, you just purchased a nice camper.
People invest in things because they are expecting the investment to appreciate in value.
Mobile homes, campers, RV's, boats, lawn mowers, new vehicles all do just the opposite - depreciate in value.

some travel trailers don't depreciate as much as others. My uncle bought a fiberglass shell trailer made by Casita 15yrs ago. He could basically sell for a little less than he paid now. I wouldn't buy anything other than fiberglass shell type camper anyway. A LOT less prone to leaking and rot. Workmanship is much better too.

I always thought it would be cool to have one and, if you have some land out in the country, to build an improved pad and structure, almost like a docking station, to give added amenities, instead of having a permanent full blown camp/cabin.

I just bought a 5th wheel back in April this year. It was a 2009 Jayco eagle superlite from an 80 year old preacher on Craigslist. I got it for $10,900. He was the original owner and it was clean and looked almost new.
Travel trailers like cars will start to depreciate once it leaves the lot. But campers are the worst of the two. I did go look around for newer travel trailers but I couldn't justify the price.

A lot of people are using them to build a house on land.
