ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A former deputy with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office has been sentenced after having sex with a 14-year-old girl while on duty back in 2016.
The 23rd Judicial District Court confirms William Lanoux, 33, of Prairieville, has been sentenced to serve a 1-year prison sentence. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for 15 years upon release.
Lanoux pleaded guilty on Thursday, February 15 to one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of malfeasance in office.
Prosecutors say Lanoux solicited having sex with the teen in his unmarked Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office vehicle on June 13, 2016. Lanoux, who was on duty, had arranged to meet the girl via social media. He claims he thought he was having consensual sex with an 18-year-old.
1year?!?!?!?

If the deputy was a female teacher, he’d get a promotion.

Must have been one helluva 14 year old if this was legitimate. That's quite the misunderstanding.

Sounds pretty ridiculous. I know of a 19 y/o who got 2 years (no probation, parole or reduction of sentence) for looking at child porn. I don't know any of the particulars, but he wasn't some porn kingpin. He was a dipshit beating his meat to teenagers. I think he has to register as a sex offender too, although there was no actual sex involved.

If he were a LSU player violating probation for this, he'd get a team vote

He served, he's still a hero in my book.

He's in the wrong, for sure, but this is possible.
When I was 18, there was a girl at the church I was going to at the time who liked me and whom I was totally happy to have the attention of. Until I learned she was 13. 5'11, very mature-looking, at least 36-Cs at that point. Had no idea she was that young. Found out and that was the end of that.

You need to get your head checked

As it stands now, there is no defense to this crime. But should there be? Not saying it would be appropriate in this particular case, but what about the 21 year old who meets a 16 year old in a bar. The 16 year old intentionally misrepresents her age to be18. Minors are charged as adults all of the time. Why should this be any different? The defense may not always be believable, but should there be such a defense?
