Why doesn’t BTR make a deal with southwest service the airport?

I don't think the BTR runways are long enough to support the SWA planes.

ETA: I stand corrected:

Landing Southwest would be a big get for the Baton Rouge airport – Capital Region travelers looking to book cheap flights on the low-cost airline routinely drive to the airport in New Orleans where there are numerous daily flights to 99 other U.S. cities serviced by Southwest. It recently added Cuba to its destinations, too.

Southwest would likely operate the largest commercial aircraft to-and-from Baton Rouge. Southwest uses Boeing 737s. Current commercial airlines at the Baton Rouge airport operate smaller, 55-passenger jets. The 737 holds close to 140 passengers.

The airport is able to accommodate a 737. Air Force One, a 747 and much larger than a 737, landed in Baton Rouge in 2005. In January, a smaller Air Force One landed in Baton Rouge for a visit by President Obama. Then, Obama flew into Baton Rouge on a 757 - still larger than a 737. In February, a chartered Southwest 737 landed at the airport, too.

Hennessy said Southwest appears to like Baton Rouge.

“[Unlike in the past] Now, Southwest calls us wanting to have a meeting. There's something there that they're interested in,” he said.

While there is no firm timetable on when Southwest would fly here, officials are confident something will happen.

“At some point in the future… we'll get some service from Southwest.”

Saturday afternoon, Southwest said it has had no official conversations with the airport in Baton Rouge, but the airline is looking at future possibilities.

"It's not on our map, but definitely remains on our radar," a company spokesperson said.

New Orleans airport officials did not wish to comment when reached Friday.

LSU football routinely charters 767’s out of BTR for the big road games, even a 777 once.

Yeah, $99 round trip sounded too good to be true.

They probably thought the price was round trip like most airlines display. All the "budget" airlines like Southwest, Jet Blue, et al seem to do individual legs rather than round trip.

About to say. I’m not sure where this nonsense comes from.

I know the 737 has craprastic runway performance compared to the 757, but that airport has seen Air Force One (a massive 747) and it’s associated cargo transport jets.

There is no runway constraint at BTR for any type of passenger jet that would operate there or need to land there if there was an emergency at MSY. BTR’s Runways are actually significantly longer than Midway in Chicago, which is a major Southwest hub.

BTR’s constraint with Southwest will likely be available gates. They will have to expand one of the concourses. I think there is only one gate available now. Luckily they have plenty of space to expand that.
