Walking away with your back to the bear is a bad idea. The dad not getting between the boy and bear is another bad idea.
Make a shite ton of noise and be as "big" as possible. "hey bear" Hey Bear" is always a good greeting in bear country.
Most bears don't like to eat things that know their names...

Count me down as one who thinks the dad did a good job. If the bear isn't being agressive, no need to cause a fight or flight response from it while your son is in between you. walking away at a pace that lets the son get closer while the dad maintains eye contact seems like a good idea.
