I’m honestly asking, what does this mean? I’m being pretty up front that I’m no watch expert.

I tell you what, no need to trust me, but I am right, start an account on Watchuseek and ask about it, the thread will be whacked in minutes since fakes cannot be discussed there.

It is not just a fake but a REALLY poor one.

I got a battery changed in a Tag at Shreve, Crump, and Low. I should have just bought a new watch. Those gurgling swan pitchers they have are cool though.

Unless it has sentimental value, swapping the diamond bezel for a regular one would update the watch.

Well then maybe it is in fact a replica. It’s been sitting in storage for a while so I know nothing about it. I just wanted to do something nice and get it working again.

Appreciate the input from everyone. This is an area I’m definitely not versed in.

Good to know. Thank you.

Those IWCs are slick. Is the Smurf white gold or stainless?

I could have been kinder. My usual watch forum reacts like the OT when a "less than authentic" watch shows up.

Yours was a fair response. Again, I truly know next to nothing about watches so the “tells” of a fake are lost on me.

It was in a random drawer and I know nothing about it. I was just trying to do something nice.

Frankly y’all saved me from embarrassing myself by bringing it to a jeweler.

Honestly, that was my main objective.

Mission accomplished.

Watches are amazing little pieces of history. I just have no understanding when it comes to them. My wife never mentioned it or told me about it, so I thought it would just be a nice gesture to get it fixed up.

She never actually told me whether or not it was real, I just assumed. Which made an arse of me and, well, me.

No. Do not use Lee Michaels. They will rip you off. Go to the Watch Repair guy on Florida Blvd. I have used him to service my Rolex for the last 15 years or so.

Where to shop for a new rolex, or even a used one?

Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it is a ripoff.

I have had mine for over 30 years. I have no idea where I would look for one now if I were in the market for a new one.

Try JomaShop for watches. They have a good reputation.

Sorry, I missed your post from earlier.

DavidSW LINK is the goto guy for "new" Rolex watches and occasionally a used one. I put new in quotes since resellers can not call them new but his are new (if listed as unworn) with the box and papers. Note for most Rolex models you aren't going to get a huge discount, especially the steel watches.

For the for sale sections of Watchuseek and Rolexforums are good options for used watches, they do require a level of due diligence but both forums police the for sale section pretty well. Plenty of long term members with good feedback on both sites.

Also as a PSA don't think all counterfeit Rolex watches are as easy to spot as this one. They are good enough now that many average jewelers can get caught off guard even when the back is open and the movement exposed. With watches, you always buy the seller.
