Fug that. I paid for it I'm going to use it. I know that power will be back on on a couple days but I still am going to do this pile of laundry and bake a turkey.

My Kohler is 11 years old and has 240ish hours on it. Runs here and there when we lose power and ran for a week during the freeze a few years back. No problems. And I love the app that lets you know when it runs -- even for maintenance.

That said, your dealer is important. My first dealer wasn't great with service and switched to Steadfast Electric. They've been great so far.

deal with this stuff a lot. MOST people would be well served with a manual transfer switch and a portable generator with a proper backfeed cord setup. That's about $3000 if you go retarded fancy with it, and is perfectly serviceable for the rare extended outage event

This is the way. While all my neighbors were spending 15-30k on whole home backups, I spent 4k for a 50amp plug, 13kw electric start tri-fuel, some poly gas tubing, feeder wires, and a soft start.
My generator is all the way at the back of my property, so I don't have to listen to it run, all I have to do to start it is flip a breaker and hit the start button on the remote.

Some of the joneses around me had to take out loans for their setup. Wild.

I'm amazed when I drive around struggling lower middle class subdivisions and see so many generacs. Either ppl got more money than I think or they are in debt to the hilt.

Maybe most people in the US but not most people on a Louisiana-based website reading this.

Many of us won’t be at the house when the power goes off.

Who’s going to turn the generator on then?

Leave it running when you evacuate? Not a great plan. How long will you be gone? How much fuel do you have? Who’s checking the oil level?

The reason to have a back-up generator is to be able to use it when you need it. An automatic transfer switch is integral to being able to use it.

I got a good deal, I don’t remember how much but remember it was 10k below original quote for a 50kw cause someone put order in and put deposit down then back out and he had to get rid of it

What brand of 13kw did you get? It seems like the majority of the ones that big are some no name brand. Also, how did you wire in the 50 amp plug to your breaker box?

Well to be honest, if we are not home, why would I need a generator running?

My freezer will be good for a few days. If I cant make it back in three days, I've got bigger problems than losing the 500 bucks worth of meat in my freezer.

Other than the freezer, nothing else has to run.
