And for no good reason whatsoever but that they’re told it’s offensive.

quote:

No, it's not. Caucasian makes no sense. Most white people are not descended from people from the Caucasus region. And none of that has anything do with it being "an accurate depiction of race."

The point is that it’s not demeaning. It’s just people who use the English language attempting to use a word as an identifier for people, and since our language is one that grows and adopts other languages into it’s own over time, instead of languages like German that do not, it fits. It’s origins were certainly not meant to be demeaning, nor were the Spanish when they used it to describe black people.

Another misunderstood Spanish word for people is Creola (Creole), and people assuming it refers to black people instead of what it’s original meaning was to the Spanish, people living in provincial areas under French rule. Yes, some were black, and some were white, but it’s not based in race as it is in governance.

In all of this it’s the original intent that gives it meaning, not someone’s screwed up understanding or feeling of what it means.

It is to many. Whether you think it should be or not.

Almost no words were originally intended to be demeaning. They gained that over time. Like you said, language evolves and meaning changes.

What nakes "negro" the "most accurate depiction of race"?

What makes negro better than black?

Well, so is Picnic, but that doesn’t mean it has validity

Imagine growing up in such a rich, privileged world that you have the time to sit around and think up this bullshite.

There’s a reason why this insanity is only found among the super white and super rich progressive circles.

The question being what makes it better than black?

It doesn’t necessarily, but it also doesn’t mean it’s demeaning either. It’s Spanish for Black, so calling someone a Negro or a Black is the exact same fricking thing.

If you're speaking Spanish to a Spanish speaker, sure. Otherwise it's just going out of your way to not use the current term.

You just made up your whole original point that negro is somehow "the most accurate depiction of race". Why?

We need to start an underground movement “my language my choice” and just say whatever the hell you want.

Because African-American doesn’t, as they may not be an American, and they may very well not hail from Africa either. It’s like assuming because I’m white that I come from Europe and am a European-American. What if my family comes from Argentina, or South Africa? Wouldn’t that make me an Argentinian-American, or even an African-American myself?

It’s nonsense.

Yeah, the current term has changed in acceptability in my life many times. We went from Negro, to Colored People, to Black, to African-American, and now back to Black, or some still go by African-American. Nobody really knows for sure. You just take your chances.

Every bit of this is complete and utter fricking nonsense, but I’ll tell you this, stick around a bit and it will change yet again.

Why does this matter? Society does not need or have to constantly change semantics because some people are stupid.

Speaking of the “current term”, why does it keep changing? And who decides when to change it? Is there a committee or something? Could they maybe do something like a press release the next time it changes so we’re not constantly wondering what the accepted “current term” might be?

What do they call black people in Spain, or other Spanish speaking countries? Have they banned that word? Are they not allowed to say it at all? Do they care?
