Gardere was built in the 80s and 90s. Many of the worst "slums" in BR were built in the 60s and 70s and were very affluent neighborhoods. forced bussing, the war on drugs, racial politics, the war on poverty, and Section 8 combined to destroy these and many other neighborhoods.

Is it wrong of me to think they should start building buildings like the Chinese? Anyone living in Section 8 housing should live in buildings built SPECIFICALLY for Section 8/Welfare.

Welfare buildings should be like this.....

That's just me though.

I can show you many crime-ridden neighborhoods in Baton Rouge that meet all of those exact requirements.

Not all of those requirements, but some, and it isn't fool proof when you have people accustomed to their throw away societies and super growth economy. It's all disposable, especially when you trick yourself into thinking that you can outrun your problems with an endless amount of land to evacuate to. Pretty soon you will meet up and have to finally deal with your problems or end up with a 2 to 3 hour commute and fighting for a pasture in the middle of who the frick cares Louisiana.

We'd be a hell of a lot better if if we were an island, and then we'd understand just how important it is to make smart decisions for our future and our kid's future, as well as their kids. Nothing to hand down, but a legacy of running. No family home, just a place to stay rather than live and put down roots.

Yeah all the pleasantries of a quiet suburban neighborhood are wasted on the no-class trash who destroy every community they enter. Doesn't take long for repairs to be ignored, grass to not get cut, garbage on the streets, and then crime. Every time.

Well, where are the neighborhood requirements and city ordinances enforcing people maintain a set standard to not park the car in the front lawn, or let the grass go to seed, etc?

That's as much our neglect as it is those trashy bastards who also live in Baton Rouge, St. George and other outlying areas.

You can blame your federal government. It's called Section 8 and it's coming to a home near you!

Section 8 is guaranteed money to the landlord. The tenant pays a small share of the rent while the government pays the rest. The tenants, since they're paying so little, generally have no respect for the place that they're renting and will tear up the place. Because the government doesn't care about the state of the property and sends checks regardless, the landlord has no incentive for upkeep.

Many residential, single-family home neighborhoods are filled with section 8 rent houses because after the stock market crash in 2008, many homes foreclosed on by banks were then converted into rental property so the bank could earn some additional cash flow while trying to sell the foreclosed homes. The government money was so good that they stopped trying to sell them and became slum lords. The banks are only worried about keeping their costs down and their units full, so they do minimal if any maintenance, pack tenants in like sardenes, and charge high rental rates since the government is picking up the tab. The best part is, you're paying for it with your taxes while the tenants (who legally can't have more than about $1000 in their bank accounts) commit crimes for tax free income because they'll lose their section 8 status if they earn/save too much money.

Ain't America grand!

I loathe Sec 8. It is a horrible fed gov program that no politican talks about.

I was so excited, for about 2 days last year, when the gov shutdown threatened to cut Sec 8 funding.

Yep...I ofter wonder what liberals who champion government intrusion (welfare, sect. 8, forced busing, soft on crime, etc.etc. )feel when they are confronted in their own homes with this crap. Do they wise up and move or welcome the destruction and safety of their families by looking the other way as they continue to vote in "progressive policies"?

We haven't. Government used our money to do that. I'm talking about us, the private sector, investing in our city and building and redeveloping areas for growth that make good sense.

I only wish I had a map of say 1954, 64, 74, 84, and so on as a comparison to overlay. Of course, the bonus is we can use this map to illustrate the St. George crime invasion in the future. It's already begun as you can see.
