Youd have to know late fee revenue before you can just write this off. I wonder how big this number actually is, it might be really small.

I would bet a significant amount of money that this doesn't happen and that you have no idea what you're talking about.

It's part of an effort to "reduce barriers for teens and adults that need the Library's resources whenever and wherever they are," officials said in a news release.

Seems if trash can refuse to return resources without penalty, that would INCREASE the barriers for others who want access to those missing materials.

I ran up late fees into the 30 dollars range in my teens because I would borrow too much for me to chew off all at once. Would politely ask the person at check out to absolve them upon returning- never a problem

If only people read the article...

quote:

The library will still be taking steps to get people to return books. Library cardholders will continue to receive reminders about return dates for overdue materials through email and phone.

An overdue bill notice will be sent on the 60th overdue day, requesting payment for the cost of the item and a $5 processing fee.

Around the 70th overdue day, a collection notice is sent in the patron’s name to the Parish Attorney’s Office for accounts totaling $35 or more. The Parish Attorney’s Office will send a letter to the patron requesting payment within 5 days.

And before anyone gets snarky about how ineffectual that will be, it's got far more teeth than fricking library fines

Considering how few libraries are located where most of the taxes are collected (St. George), this is not surprising.

This has gotten absurdly twisted to an almost comical level. Roughly half of the parish's sales tax is collected in the proposed (though currently failing to incorporate) St. George, or about $43M. The EBR parish budget is just over $1B. Billion, with a b. Even the rosiest projections from the St. George incorporation effort estimated tax revenue after incorporation to be $58M.

Again, billion, with a b.

Jones Creek is one

Is there another?

Just looked it up: the entire EBR Parish library system brings in just under $50k per year in "fines and forfeitures". For context, the system brings in roughly $52M in revenue per year. So fines make up 0.1% of library revenue, and that ignores the time and expense required to collect it, etc, etc.

The Bluebonnet branch isn't technically in the proposed St. George area, but it's literally across the street.

ETA: I looked it up just out of curiosity, and the Bluebonnet and Jones Creek branches combine for roughly the same circulation as the main branch. Just found that interesting enough to post.

and once your card hits $25 in fines (fees), you cannot use your card for the computer, to check out books, or to use overdrive until something is paid.

That's actually a clever way to troll local facebook church ladies. Not sure why, but I bet this upsets them.
