laangler, Try the Nelson Demille, John Corey Series!! Really good

The Charm School is in my top 5 all time, but I haven't read the Corey series.

For the person who asked about Flynn like series, Daniel Silva's books are less door kicking than Mitch Rapp, but they're very good once you get into them. They also ruin you for shittier Mitch Rapp type stuff if you're not already there.

For anyone who likes espionage stuff, or especially Russia/cold war stuff, I can't recommend Jason Matthews' Red Sparrow and Palace of Treason enough. Cheesy names, really, really well researched books. He's a former CIA officer I think. Red Sparrow will be a movie.

And of course I Am Pilgrim is probably the most celebrated spy novel of the last 5 years or so. It's different, but pretty awesome.

All the Light We Cannot See is truly amazing. The single best novel in years.

while i really enjoyed it, this is a bit of stretch. But definitely worth reading.

These are the best books I have read this year

Good lord bird - fictional account of john brown's failed insurrection. absolutely hysterical

terry pratchet - the nation - great little alternative history. Ending got a bit ridiculous but a fun read

the water knife - slow start but gets going. Dystopian world where water is a scarce resource.

peter clines - the fold - just a good little sci fi thriller about a transporter type device

robert galbraith - silkworm - this is the chick who wrote harry potter mystery series. its not really a mystery in that you can't figure out who done it but a good read nonetheless

cixin lui - three body problem

markus sarkey - brilliance

Just went to his webpage and all of those books look great. How were they? Was most interested in the Lusitania and Hitler books but I've never read a non-fiction novel

My husband got me liking his books. All of his non fiction novels are great. I really liked Devil in the White City and In the garden of beasts the most. His last book about Lusitania was very informative as well. I mostly read fiction though so many times I will read another fiction book the same time I'm reading a Erik Larson book.

Anyone have another series similar to Flynn or Thor?

The Camel Club books by David Baldacci. Love 'em. The Jack Reacher books by Lee Child.

ETA: Harry Bosch books by Michael Connelly.

I'm not on it but I do reference it occasionally. I Am Pilgrim is different but in the end I really liked it.

Flynn

I saw him speak at a small industry gathering. Had never heard of him. Catholic from large family - basically dyslexic as a kid and wanted to be the next Tom Clancy. He was laughed at.

I have listened to many of the Mitch Rapp series on audio book (I have a long commute). American Assasin, as you young-uns like to say, is the tits. When he spoke he mentioned that he was recovering from some type of cancer. I guess he recovered for a bit, but passed away a year or two ago. Very interesting guy. May he RIP.
