Sometimes it was. I'm reading a book on the Civil War in Louisiana currently and when Union troops tried liberating some slaves from plantations, only to use them as slaves for rebuilding things but that's a different story, many didn't want to leave and chose to stay.
I know it would be frowned upon to mention it in today's world, but there were quite a few slaves who were treated extremely well by their owners. From getting educated, to having good clothes and even pay to an extent.
