They're really not, though. All leopards are panthers but not all panthers are leopards. It's a generic term for the genus Panthera that includes jaguars, leopards, tigers, and lions (and maybe another that I'm forgetting).

yeah but the common usage is panther = cougar = mountain lion, which is why there is this great debate about "black panthers" existing
jaguars and leopards are part of panthera and are black, but are excluded from the "black panther" argument
i mean lions/tigers are in panthera and nobody would ever call either a "panther"

True enough, though the Cougar is sometimes refered to as a panther though it is one of two of the big cats not in the genus Panthera. The other is the CHeetah whichis in the genus Acinonyx.
The genus of the Couger is actually Puma and it is the widest ranging of the new world Big Cats
