people, especially at the lower end of society, live frustrating lives and want to get rich, quick. they also don't understand the inner-workings of the schemes they get involved in. this was the perfect combination of the allure of quick money, ease of entry, and ignorance
just look at all the shitty youtube crypto channels that got popular the past couple months. lots of idiot 17 year olds and lots of paid promoters.
then you had major, legit ponzi schemes like BitConnect
