Get better weather stripping for the bottom of the door.

I'm pretty good with bugs and insects but those giant roaches freak me out so much. I was sleeping on an air mattress a few years ago and woke up to one crawling on me and I still haven't fully recovered.

This was the first night I was staying in a new house I was renting and almost moved out right there

I DETEST the American Cockroach with all of my being. When I lived in LA, it seemed like you saw one every couple of months. And they have the uncanny knack for flying/running straight at you.

I got trapped in my own kitchen once, by one.

I owned a condo, with an apartment-like kitchen. Galley? Entrance and 3 walls. Walk in, go about my business, turn around and this thing is right over the door, meaning I had just entered beneath him. We stared each other down, I thought about calling 911 I went to grab something, anything, and he was gone. I had to live with the fact that he was off celebrating, having drinks and urging his buddies to come visit.

I don't recommend watching the roach episode from the X-Files Monster of the Week episode.

Lastly, for those saying the tenant is dirty - the big ones aren't tied to food and filth. They are just a fact of life in tropical climates. It's the little ones you have to worry about. And. after 11 years here in Florida, I have only encountered one "Palmetto bug" as they have cutely named the big ones down here.

While typing this, I find myself looking up to the corners of my ceilings. You know, just in case.

Yeah nothing turns me into a 5 year old than when I go to kill one and it starts flying

I just run away screaming and flail my arms around hoping it doesn't attack

Stupid thing is, they can't really hurt you. Yes, they bite, but not if you are flailing. They don't sting. They are just so awful. And maybe it is because they seem to charge you, rather than running away.

My method was to find anything aerosol, spray him until he was twitching, grab him with a paper-towel very gingerly, by an antenna, throw him in the toilet, let him twitch a little more while yelling "I got you!!!" (to an insect) and flush.

On looking back, I am guessing he never actually died. I just couldn't stand that noise when smashing them. Ugh. I need to leave this thread.

Probably wouldn’t hurt to go around the exterior looking for any small gaps. You can fill them with a good silicone or spray foam. Even paint can fill very small gaps.

After 4 years of sun and wind and rain and stuff some areas may have dried out and cracked or come loose.

I hope the thread has solved the case for you. But as someone who had a similar issue in the past, I’ll chime in.

They don’t “infest” like the German ones do, but they can form in high numbers, especially the non-flying big ones. We had a major problem with the big ones in our shed. Like you open the door and 25 of them are scurrying around. Nightmare fuel.

We also used to see big ones (flying and non-flying) in the house every few days. We used Orkin, and the guy sprayed a bunch. Wasn’t working until the guy left and we were switched to a new guy. New guy played no games.

He told us to trim/cut/remove any vegetation near the house. We had a tree that had gotten too big in the front garden, so we cut it down. We kept the bushes trimmed and weeds removed regularly.

He also said to keep the gutters clear. Not just a few times a year. Make it a regular habit to go up there and blow the gutters and downspouts to prevent any buildup.

He also said to fix weather stripping issues on doors and address any problematic windows.

Then we hid roach hotels all over the house. Like 30 of them. I replace them every May.

Then he sprayed the inside and outside. Laid bait around the perimeter, inside the crawlspace, and on the roof. He also said he sprayed some natural areas that he thought they might be living but he said not to tell anyone he did that. Maybe an environmental reason.

I hate roaches with a passion and have a legit phobia of them. We rarely - like once or twice a year - see them. Of any kind.

I spray my yards and houses with Talstar P every 2 to 3 weeks. I don't have problems with any bugs.
