Prepare to be ensconced in nothing but sausage, though.

One of the reasons I picked LSU over CSM

He should look at Georgia Tech as well. I agree with others, he should look beyond LSU and La Tech.
If making a choice between the two LSU all day long.

That's pretty normal for engineering schools. I think the male/female ratio at A&M is something like 13:9.

That has absolutely no basis in fact. You have no statistics to back that up. I'd bet you $100 that LSU has a lower retention rate.

I got a full ride at LSU with that ACT and a worse GPA a few years ago. Of course, I totally wasted it by majoring in something stupid.

What does this kid want to major in?

Dear God, no thanks.
I understand their frustration with LSU's bandwagon, but they have a near irrational hate for LSU

If MIT doesn't work out I hear that Southern has a very good engineering program.

Yes, in the engineering department, A&M is over 75% male, but the university is only 52% male and it has 60,000 students.
At MS&T, the entire school is over 3/4 male and there are less than 8,000 students. And it's in bumfrick Missouri.
CSM's entire student body is almost 3/4 male and has less than 6,000 students.

Go to GT out of state with those stats

That's because LSU's basic engineering courses are not designed to teach students, they're designed to weed them out.

All I'm saying is he needs to decide on his own. I love Baton Rouge and I still pull for LSU but Tech has set me up for a career in my field better than LSU could have ever. Sometimes a small school leads to you getting more internship opportunities, like it did for me.
I'm not an engineer, so I can't comment on that, but high schools kids need to make their own decisions. Visit, talk to professors and make your decision.

A lot of good comments here but the OP said the young man had lived a sheltered life so don't completely discount a smaller school closer to home where it may not feel quite as intimidating as a larger school farther away from home.
Certainly LSU makes a lot of sense to most people on this board, me included.
Had I had the resources I may have chosen Tech over LSU instead of where I actually ended up.
Finally, I had a uncle who was a Tech engineering graduate who made it almost to the top of the largest oil company out there. He always told me it was the Tech atmosphere that really made the difference.

If I were him - I'd definitely take a look at MIT, it's one of highest regarded universities in the world. With saying that, of course the quality of student there will be superb. Graduating from MIT is surely not promised.
If it comes down between LSU or Tech, I'd pick LSU. Our alumni base is bigger and we are about to break ground on our new 100+ million dollar engineering complex. LINK & Breaking New Ground Video
However, with his stats, I would definitely look out of state too.

quote:Stanford 4-year grad rate: 80%. 6-year 95%.

MIT 6-year 92+%
Things are different at elite schools.
LSU 6-year is 69%.

The suicide rate at MIT is off the chart, the smartest kids in the world struggle to just pass, most will take as many classes as possible at Harvard because of easy grading, they have a dual enrollment agreement (Yes, Harvard serves as MIT's Southern U.) this Kid should stay close to home.

Yeah, this site will definitely be biased. Here's a bunch of anecdotal evidence from my life:
I go to Tech now. I have a 35 ACT, national merit, etc, and I can say with full confidence that Tech's engineering program is pretty strong, and it's pretty funny to see people posting lol at having it as a choice. Note: I'm a math major, but my life is basically engineering because pretty much everyone I associate with is an engineering student.
At Tech, the entire university is devoted to engineering. 100%. I would not encourage anyone to come here for any other degree except engineering (from an academic perspective). The career fair is literally 40-50 engineering companies, and then a few computer science and accounting companies. All the resources at Tech revolve around the engineering programs.
My girlfriend's brother goes to a "higher ranked engineering program" (around where LSU is ranked), and he's jealous/embarrassed that his junior engineering project is weaker than her freshman engineering project.
It's extremely cheap. I'm getting about $6000 a year deposited into my bank account to go here, in addition to living for free in the nicest apartments on campus, taking as many classes as I want, etc. I get boosts in my scholarship to pay for anything I need. Last year I got a macbook because they would pay for any computer I wanted. If I need software for class I just tell them I need some money.
Tech's student body is most likely weaker, which means he can wreck shop in all of his classes and get the best grades, internships, etc.
I'm kind of scatterbrained from trying to respond to an entire thread at once, but yeah, go to Tech.
