Tripadvisor.com is the best resource out there for DIY trip planning. I've planned itineraries for several international vacations using their site. Personally I think it's best for finding bang for your buck hotels and amazing tours. Good luck!

I did this 8 day tour in 2011 (Try to arrive a day or two early--there is LOTS to see in Rome). Met some amazing people, two of whom invited me to visit them in Australia last year. All you have to do is enter your CC number, book a flight, and pack. They take care of everything else. Worth every penny.

I went back in the 90's before the Internet was filled with travel info and used the Frommer's Guide to Italy to plan my trip.

My wife went to Italy for 2 weeks, and she used tripadvisor, Rick Steve's travel books, and Italy for Dummies. Definitely, look into Amalfi Coast/Pompeii.

Please do not go as one of those mindless tourbus groups. Hard to immerse yourself in another country when you're surrounded by nothing but 45 overweight english speakers wearing fanny packs
Those tour groups really ruin places for the rest of visitors. Block up alleyways, cram through rooms at exhibits, hold up those stupid fricking signs.

Yes you will love it, I have traveled the world to over 37 Countries
1. Do Not take a group tour unless you like to be headed, like cattle, buses tourist restaurants, waiting on people.
2. Get a translator app
3. Learn culture customs and language, yes, no, thank you, please, I would like (instead of "I want"), my name is, you're ? Are you from here?
4. Read places you would like to visit, what tours you like email for a reservation, that way you will wait about 15 to 30 minutes instead of three hours.
5. I will never take a group tour again.
JMO. If you ever need help just ask

Don't go to Naples. The waterfront area is the Camden, NJ/Bronx of Italy only dirtier and seedier. Spend most of your time in Rome and Tuscanny.
