My trip is based in Rome, and yesterday I was surprised how easy it was to take a day trip to Florence and back. The high speed train was really nice; I'll plan to travel around more by rail next trip to Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

Went in 2005. Venice, Florence, Rome, Amalfi Coast. Flew in and out of Naples since I took a Space-A flight ($15 each way!), but spent very little time in the Naples area except for Pompeii and Sorrento. Highlight was a 250cc scooter trip down the Amalfi Coast.
Used Lonely Planet and generally wandered around eating, drinking and looking at old stuff. Met some interesting locals each place we went by just attempting to converse in Italian. Was my honeymoon, so I spent a lot of time drinking coffee, beer or wine and talking with barkeeps while my new bride shopped.
My next trip will be to Croatia. Supposed to be Italy 50 years ago, and much cheaper.

If you know what dates you're looking for (either exact or a rough estimate say September for 10 days) I can keep an eye out and look at flights for you.

Don't waste more than one day in Venice. The most touristy of all the cities I visited in Italy. Loved Rome and Florence. Try to stay in Cinque Terre for at least 2 days. Hike the trail between the five fishing villages. I stayed in Vernazza. Do your homework when it comes to restaurants. I ate at as many places the locals eat to get the full Italian experience. Most of these places are off the beaten path and may be a little difficult to find but very authentic and worth the time to find. Mario's in Rome was money.

Assuming your trip will be about a week long, here's how I would approach planning:
Pick one city you're most interested. Best choices would probably be Florence or Rome, maybe Naples.
Go to that city and explore it, and take day trips to its surrounding countryside.
There's so much to see and do in any one place, that it doesn't make sense to me to try to "see it all" in one trip. Just my opinion. I'm not into cattle drive tourism.

I would suggest avoiding Florence on Sun. We went on a Sunday and all of the Mursems closed at noon. Fortunately, we were able to see the statue of David but that was about it.
