Seasoned wood
Start small
Might have to split the wood if you don't have enough air flow for larger logs

Wait, hold up. You're inside, with a fire starting device, dry wood, no wind or rain, and you cant build a decent fire? What kind of man are you?

Probably.
Most houses can't passively distribute airflow.

Wood may be wet. Take a good fixed blade knife and split it into smaller pieces.
Edit: WOW sounds like you have a mangina and should just save the world the trouble and throw yourself into the fire. Pussification continues. I hope you're queer. Or a woman.

Seasoned wood is best. I like seasoned oak. Some fireplaces will draw your warm air up the chimney. If you don't have a damper, it's possible all your heat is going up the chimney. If you really want to use the fireplace for heat you might consider a fireplace insert.
