Best value road bike?

Anyone have any recommendations on a road bike? I do not claim to be well-versed in any matters pertaining to road bikes, but I am just looking for a solid road bike to get me from point A to point B and get some decent exercise. My budget would be about $500 to $600.

Look for something with Shimano Tiagra components. If you can find something with Shimano 105, then that's even better. Typically 105 and up is considered "enthusiast" or "advanced". Tiagra and below (Sora/Claris) is the "cheap" stuff. My first bike had Tiagra and it wasn't terrible at all.
As far as the frames....you are going to have to shop to find something in that range. Sometimes local bike shops will have a 1200 dollar bike from last year they are willing to sell for $600. Shop hard and you can get a good bike for cheap. If you plan to just walk in and buy something.....you are going spend more. I spent 3 weeks stopping into different shops last year and saved $1000 on my bike.
Then there is always used.....

I definitely am not opposed to a used bike, but I think I might still need to get it from a local dealer. Thanks for the input

Get a mountain bike. More versatile and less gay.

I would take a look at bikes direct.com. they have wholesale priced bikes for various pricing categories. good bike selection for just getting into it

Thanks, looks like they have some good ones. I will need to go see what size I need but I am thinking 54cm.

With that budget definitely go used. I've bought all of mine from Craigslist.

I personally wouldn't buy from bikes direct. They aren't selling you wholesale bikes at discount prices. They are selling you discount bikes at discount prices. They sell cheap bikes....not comparable bikes.
There's notihing wrong with that if you are not looking for anything fancy, but don't assume it's some great deal that is equivalent to what Specialized/Trek/Cervelo/etc. are putting out at that component level.
I say if you want a bike like that, find a local Performance Bicycle shop. It's basically a chain that sells Fuji. Fuji is by no means the best, but I bet you can get your hands on a decent aluminum frame in your price range that you can actually put your hands on before buying. They usually have high school or college aged kids working there who are into bikes. Not necessarily the guy who has 20 years experience fitting people, but they'll have a good idea. It's better than buying offline to me (if you have no idea what you are looking for....I'd buy offline because I know what geometries fit me).

Bikes direct . Com all you want to buy is the components frames don't matter they are all the same

See my sig picture. You won't find anything else on the road, be it two wheels or four, that holds value any better than a Harley-Davidson.

If you're just looking to tool down the Katy Trail and look at scenery, look at craigslist. Pawn Shops even have some decent bikes for just cruising around. Just go to a bikeshop to figure out what frame size you need.
This looks good Craigsist Specialized

I would look at some of the Vilano bikes.

lies.....might not be a big difference at that price range, but there's a difference. And if you get say a specialized allez (the cheapest model), you can upgrade components to get close to the high end model. Upgrading the motobecane will get you a shite frame with good components.
