Alaska Pacific U & Sheldon Jackson College offers a lot. Avoid Prince William Sound College.

Maybe he should look into Montana State in Bozeman. One of the top areas in the country (if not the world) for someone who wants a career in the outdoors.

How many are there? Three?

UAA, UAF and UAS. There's also Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage.

There's talk of consolidating the State system down to one school.

I went to UAF (Fairbanks) for a year before transferring to LSU. UAF is a great science/engineering school.

Yeah, particularly if you want to emphasize polar or arctic engineering.

The local school (UAS, my alma mater) offers a cool degree in outdoor studies. It kicks arse. UAF is the flagship school, UAA is good for health sciences.

Sheldon Jackson doesn't exist anymore.

Sitka campus of UAS only offers two year degrees.

UAF has some very good biology programs, especially fisheries. They have a lab here in Juneau

Yeah, White Mountains to the North, the Alaska range to the South. Anywhere in Ak is outdoorsy. It can get really cold there, but its not unbearable. The hills above town can stay much warmer.

UAA in Anchorage is fairly large and has an extensive field of studies. For someone new to AK, it's a good starting point. Roughly 400,000 live in the area.

If this video doesn't sell your boy on becoming an Alaska (don't say Fairbanks) Nanook, you're on your own

He needs to be a hard rock geologist and go to school in Alaska. He'll get a good hard rock geo degree, will be employeed for his life, and will make a decent living.
