But the tuition is very low compared to other private schools in BR. It's a good bit less than what I currently pay for daycare and it's a very good school. I know that's not really what the OP asked, but I was wondering if that was an option there. If I moved back to BR, that's what I'd hope to be able to do.

He's at a daycare on campus that's not necessarily a feeder school but has a good relationship with UHIGH and the kids generally at least get tested for admittance. Though not all get admitted. As you were saying I'm paying a few thousand more for daycare right now than the the UHIGH tuition. The biggest concern is if he doesn't get accepted then what? Trying to stay away from the religious based private schools in BR. Moving may be the only option.

I'd guess northern AP or Zachary. Central is still pretty rural but will probably develop nicely...so it's probably more of a long term bet.

Zachary is a pretty nice suburb by south Louisiana standards. The long time locals aren't very happy with all the development they've seen the last decade....but it's not far from the airport and it's fairly easy to get to downtown or LSU from there relative to Livingston or Ascension. Public schools are good by Louisiana standards.

Northern AP isn't bad, but there's no real small town feel that some people like. It's ideal if you work in the southern part of the parish though. Not as easy of a commute to downtown or LSU.

The people from Watson and Walker that I know spend way too much time in the car....and they are crazy because LP attracts that kind of person.

Would prefer to buy. Have considered building but that seems like that could be a real headache. How big are the lots? If I do build I want to do it on a couple acres so I'd have enough room to have a pond.

Why would anyone think Zachary is on par with Prairieville or Gonzalez (not you chRxis)? Do people actually drive and look at Zachary or do they just believe the hype? It's about as fun as DeRidder.

there's one in my subdivision that was listed before we started on our house and is still on the market today, and we've been here 4 months.... they were asking $580K, but being on the market so long, i'm sure it's come down quite a bit.... if i had to guess

Stay where you are and send him to private school. The public schools in the outlying areas may be better than those in Baton Rouge but they don't even come close to the education that he would get at a private school. I moved to LP thinking I could send my kids to public school. It was the biggest mistake I have ever made. My oldest went to Live Oak and it was terrible. I ended up sending my youngest to Catholic High in Baton Rouge. The difference is immeasurable.

depends where you live... i can go down 74 to nicholson and be at LSU in 15 minutes... or i can shoot down bluff to highland and be shopping in 10-15 minutes... hell, i get to Baker in the morning (6:30 am travel time) in 35 minutes, and that's going all the way THROUGH baton rouge....

basically, nothing is really "that much" further if you live in the right spots in AP....

now the diversion canal, for as serene and shite as it is, and it is a cool little place, is "that much" further....

Watson and Live Oak are good schools, but are located across the Amite River. HEED warning on that commute if you are going into Baton Rouge morning time, and then the traffic coming back in the evening.

I can see that.

I used to work off Bluebonnet...a lot of the AP folks would complain about traffic, especially if they lived off 42. Not as much as the LP people, who I think would spend all day in the car. While I lived off Sherwood near STM, I did have to go that direction towards Mandeville around 4pm sometimes on Fridays...and that route into LP absolutely sucks.

The guys from Central had a pretty easy way of it after that Thruway opened. A lot of them also took Airline towards Cortana, then scooted over to Oak Villa/Joor on Florida to avoid the backup on Airline that occurs when it narrows around the Academy. I still can't believe Airline isn't 6 lanes through north Baton Rouge.

Zachary is actually pretty easy from downtown or LSU. The retail amenities out there are still developing and it is still pretty rural, but I'm still surprised more people don't live there. Seems to be growing, although fairly slowly.

Central and Zachary both seem like a very good choice if you fly out of BTR a lot or work downtown or at Exxon.

Watson is a nice enough area...but there's not really an easy way to get there that avoids traffic. You either have to go through Denham or Central at rush hour. No easy way....although I suspect that they'll eventually install a bridge over the river at Hooper Road.

There's always the other option....private schools or magnet schools in Baton Rouge.
