oh...and if you happen to be in the city on a Tuesday, I highly recommend a tour of Gracie Mansion (mayor's residence) if you're into that sort of thing. It is really a nice tour and a beautiful area of NYC along the East River.

Thanks. I'm actually looking from a Wednesday to Monday as of now but that sounds neat.

We've been for a quick two day trip to nyc as part of a school trip. We went to the Statue of Libert, Ellis Island and 9/11 museum and memorial so we likely won't do any of that again.

She wants to "people watch" in Times Square. This is more of a senior trip type thing but we've had friends with health issues recently and I don't think I want to wait. She's the youngest and my boys don't want to go so why should we stay here. Lol.

Only wish that it didn't have to be in July .. Can't help her mother school commitments during the summer.

Times Square is a train wreck. Stay on Central Park South or near Grand Central. Plenty of nice hotels and restaurants everywhere, its New York City.

Ok so how far of a radius is "safe" for two females to walk to their hotel?? If we end an evening at Times Square/Broadway would we need to take a cab a few blocks or is the walk "safe" say if we were near grand central?

We stayed at the W across from the Waldorf for the marathon. It was nice. Would love to stay off Central Park. Really pretty area.

NOT Times Square. Try Midtown near the Waldorf.

or even a little further west near Columbus Circle. The Mandarin Oriental there is amazing.

I'm comfortable walking all along Broadway and over an avenue from Broadway in either direction late at night, but I wouldn't go much farther than that..but that's just me, I'm very cautious. So if you plan to be in the Times Square area at night for a show, that's why I would recommend the Crowne Plaza (1st choice) the Millenium 44th St., or the Hampton Inn on 8th ave/50th street. The Roosevelt is beautiful but 3 avenues over...those side streets do get quiet and a little creepy at night.

Columbus Circle area is a good call. The train that runs into that area gets to a ton of great spots in lower Manhattan and you can walk to the theatre district pretty easily if you want to

I wouldn't worry about not feeling safe around that area of NYC. You can easily walk for miles and always see something new and exciting.

New York is unlike any city that you'll ever go to, and I suggest taking the city in just by walking all throughout.

As others have advised, do not stay in times square. Overpriced, cramped rooms, & just too noisy.
The Millennium Hilton in the Financial District is worth a look. It's nice & convenient. The Fulton st. & world trade center stations are a block away. Courtland st. station is just outside the front door. So, you can be anywhere in manhattan in 15-20 minutes.

Stay in another borough and use the subway to get everywhere else. Lots of great eateries outside of TS, and though nothing is cheap in NY you will get more bang for your buck.
