Family members made the mistake of thinking the same about my cousin last month. We had his memorial service last Saturday. Shot himself. Get him help IMMEDIATELY.
Dang I'm so sorry.
This right here is why I would err on the side of caution and have him locked up INDEFINITELY.

Yes he takes his medication. The public facility upped his dosage by a lot and he was having adverse reactions, so his regular therapist backed him back down.
I'm not sure if he would voluntarily go, but if it was that or back to the public system if we called 911, I think he would.

They said because he's been getting professional and help and was receiving treatment on the outside.
So he's currently receiving treatment from a public facility that you don't trust?

Probably would've called 911 right here.

I'm not sure if it's coming across this way, but I'm AGREEING with this. I just want him "locked up" somewhere where he is receiving real treatment.
The 4 days he was in BR public, they just let him chill in his room and do nothing but stare at the ceiling for 4 days and then let him out. There was no "treatment".

He has a therapist and a psychiatrist, privately. That's why the public system let him out so quickly.
Don't want to call the therapist or psychiatrist today in regards to this incident because they will have to report it and then he's back in the public system. Make sense?

Following the "treat others how you wanted to be treated" rule:
I would call every number on this link until you can find someone open/available and tell them your concerns. Let one of them give you advice as it will be professional advice.

I appreciate that, Pwejr. Thank you.
I was really hoping someone has had some experience with a facility near by and could provide feedback on quality of care.

You're welcome.
And I don't think you have the luxury of time to wait and ask. If he hurt himself just today, I would get on it asap. Start making calls. Not to be dramatic, but every moment for you and him sounds critical.

Sounds like maybe he's bipolar? Get him help because chances are it will only get worse. I hope you're able to find him the help he needs, mental illness is serious bidness.

I was asking because I'm pretty sure if you're older than 18 you can't force him to go to a private facility. In that case it's best to go through the public system to get him stable then go the private route.
I def would not take any chances and would have him admitted again. I would def let the therapist know that his medication seems to not be working. If the therapist thinks he only has depression then I would seek a second opinion. It would be best to document every strange behavior demonstrated by your family member. I would then give that info to his therapist and each facility he goes too. It can help them properly diagnose him

Neighbor went through the EBR center for detox, they weren't worth a shite and he died from alcohol toxicity 2 weeks after he was released. Avoid them like the plague. Normally functioning adults don't just joke and play around by calling their therapist and saying they're going to kill themselves, then doing it again 2 days later. He needs help, like tonight man. Mental health episodes are so unpredictable

If he/she is actually harming themselves then chances are admitting them into your local hospital would he my immediate recommendation. From there, the hospital can look into a behavior center that would be more long time suited. I live in North Alabama, but I have also worked in hospitals before and there's typically always a behavioral unit to the hospital. At least there they can unsure safety and care

I don't know exactly how it works with adults, but it's probably similar as minors, which i have had experience with. If you take them to OLOL the Cope team will evaluate him immediately and admit him if they deem him to be an immediate threat to himself or others. He'll be released though as soon as they feel he is no longer a threat AT THAT MOMENT. Problem is, he could be a threat 2 hours later, then you're back to square one.
A private facility would be best, but as you've found, they're hard to locate and most don't take insurance. I think there's a place in Covington, Alexandria, and Shreveport if I'm not mistaken. He would get first available bed, wherever that may be.
Mental health treatment in this country is a joke, unless you have lots of money and a good referral. Good luck. I would at least have a couple of people taking shifts to watch him until you find something.

You really need to be open and honest with these guys. That's the only way they will be able to properly diagnose and treat him. Hold nothing back. The more info they have the better.
It's okay if he has to go back through the public system. At least he is safe. You can always request to the hospital that he be sent to another mental health facility than the one he was previous at.
Posted on 6/17/16 at 9:33 pm to Joe
You can have them involuntarily committed. Private typically requires them to be willing. If he's not, it's public. Best of luck.

Is that true? Last time the hospital told us he would be sent anywhere in the state that has an open bed and it wasn't up to us, it was wherever had room. (We lucked out and he stayed in BR)

He's right. You already know it'll probably be worthless, but at least it buys you another couple days to find something worthwhile. He's not going to kill himself in a hospital. You can try to watch him, but eventually you have to sleep. The worst thing is trying to find a place spur of the moment, like you're doing, knowing that time is crucial.
Posted on 6/17/16 at 9:37 pm to Joe
That is true here in NC. They will be sent wherever there is a bed and willing to accept.
