So, we rented chairs and an umbrella for the week and have to pay this guy who isn’t the owner. Do I tip him for setting up and taking down our chairs and umbrella for the week? If so, how much?

ETA: I know the OT answer is to pay for his college, but what else you got?

They're usually tipped.

$5 for setup and takedown per day seems reasonable.

If he uses a drill and an auger (no work involved) then I don't tip.

If he has to drag the chairs to and fro, and put in the umbrella with brute force, and comes up a few times a day to adjust umbrella angle etc, I'll do $50 for the week. If it's just a day or two, $10 per day.

Never have tipped and the umbrella works just fine.

Why tip someone who is already being paid for doing his job? If he wants more money then he should get a higher paying job.

Beach chair and umbrella guys make some great money during the summer. I used to clear $1500 a week. Long hours and hard work, but great money and lots of women

In Orange Beach they're town employees and the umbrellas and chairs are property of Orange Beach.

I tip them.

Had buddies do it one summer at Sandestin and they made a shite ton of money for 19 year olds. They were rolling in it for college kids.

They got tons of tips.

But they said it was pretty miserable having to wake up that early 7 days a week and running through pop-up summer storms to put up the chairs and umbrellas.

if your umbrella flies and spears someone do you still need to tip?

and do you pull it out of the dead body on the beach or do you just let the umbrella boy do that?

Most now are managed on an Ipad or some tablet. You reserve, pay up front, and tip(if you want) on that app.

We just did this at Pelican Beach In Destin. Worked perfectly. We tipped $30($10 a day).

Tips are accepted and expected just as they are expected to come readjust or move your umbrella as often as you like during the day.
