Balance is what it's all about, so I agree with you.

Agree with you 100% on this. If you're still keeping tabs and doing things while on 'vacation' then it doesn't fall into the being completely absent vacation I was thinking of. Usually the managers you're talking about are managers just because they were the next man up and have no idea how to manage anything except doing their old job and showing up to work.

Yeah, keep tabs, small talk with important personnel, make sure the place isn't on fire and that all is working smoothly. Vacation for me is a 80/20 balance. 80% personal time, 20% of my day to work still. It also doesn't bother me to check emails and whatnot when I'm hunting, which is most of my vacation. Granted, there are some days when I don't check in on anything (i.e weekends on vacation when no one is working..), but I completely understand what you're saying though. If you're "completely absent" for that timeframe then yeah I agree with you. Lol

I feel for those guys too, we have a few of them and they're busting their asses as well, but it's very evident that they feel a need to micromanage, which I won't do.

shift work and plant operators can’t take any jabb

Not sure where that comes from. Most of the plant operators I’ve seen basically agree with what you’re saying. That too much overtime is not good for anything. I was simply pointing out that you had a hard on for high overtime shift work or plant baws. I’m not even saying to stop doing it. Like you said, it’s all in good fun. If you have ever been in a plant environment, I guess any mostly male industry really, all we do is rib on each other. That’s how we pass the time. I promise you, most plant baws can take it.

Your employer cares. Whether they take action or not because they are too scared of a lawsuit is the question.

Every month or so an OT thread pops up regarding the scummiest or most hated professions etc etc. Being from Louisiana, I can say that white collar work is usually frowned upon and not “manly”. I think everyone should be out there earning the best living they can for themselves and their families. I’ve worked my arse off to build a successful business. I just find it slightly amusing when those threads pop up that a lot of blue collar plant types have this heir of nobility to their jobs while looking down on every other industry, especially white collar jobs.

In the prior thread about plant baws, you and I actually agreed on everything. I’m simply saying that when plant operators and workers live these lifestyles and brag about pulling in 200k compared to a 9-5 office job, they often fail to mention they are working massive OT to do so.

I respect everyone’s occupation, as long as it’s legal

Yeah, I think most of us agree and are reasonable people. You honestly seem like someone I wouldn’t mind grabbing a beer with. ?? Got some crazies on this site for sure though. ?? I just go into those threads to help the conversation when people are asking about plants baws and stuff. I have done it for a long time and know a lot of people in the industry in different plants.

I have not noticed this, but I’m not in a white collar industry so maybe I’m oblivious to it. I agree with your statement about respecting everyone’s profession. From the information I have seen you post you definitely have worked your arse off to build what you have. Definitely respect the hell out of that!

I think when they don’t mention the overtime they probably think it’s already understood. Base salaries are around $90k to $130k when you’re topped out depending on where you work, but there are operator jobs that make $200k base salaries, the nuclear plant is one. I’ve heard it’s incredibly stressful though since it’s government regulated.

I don't have a problem with that attitude who's paid their dues to get where they are.

But typically, the "I want paternity leave and mental health days" are guys that run out of PTO in October because they can't handle the grind of a 40 hour work week.

I use sick time so seldom that my boss has to remind me to use it or lose it from time to time
