I have a family member who was going to move 3MM over to Stanford, but they didn’t call him back for almost 2 weeks so he said F them. Best/Luckiest decision ever.

Wrong! Your dad gave you shitty info. The genius of Stanford's scheme was that it was extremely believable on the surface. He was using Certificate of Deposits paying 2% over the going rate in the US. Obviously it was a scam but it was extremely believable in the moment to many investors from Houston to BR.

There were some very prominent business people in Ascension who fell for his schtick and lost millions

Do your own research, there are rabbit holes on Stanford on YT. But essentially he was the first ponzi schemer to ever use the angle of CD's as the center piece to his fraud with legitimate brokers. People that fell for his scheme were far from idiots as your dad told you.

Nvm: didn’t realize season 1 true Detective is a fictional show
I thought it was based on a 1990s Louisiana murder scandal

His claim was it was too good to be true, not that the methods weren’t believable. I guess you fell for it.
