re: Baton Rouge Baws - Why did this storm seem to flood areas that 2016 didn't touch?

6 inches of rain fell today.
The difference in today and in 2016, the Ground water table is super high due to the River, so the ground is already saturated.
High intensity rain, and the already saturated ground caused lots of surface runoff and flash flooding.

Let this be a gentle reminder that just because you didn't flood in 2016 doesn't necessarily mean you won't flood in a different event.
Granted, if you were surrounded by people that flooded in 2016 but didn't flood then you'll probably be okay but if you're in a different part of town then don't assume it cant happen there as well.

BR drainage said they have a plan for $15 million and 2 years to hopefully fix it. We are safe.
Don't they have to study it first?

Over 7 inches off stumberg from my meter. And my dads house flooded again in Shenandoah.

That was a gusher.
There are some tornado damage photos of flipped cars at Baton Rouge general on twitter. Looks like maybe another tornado happened around BRCC.
Supposedly a lot of cars parked on the street in Spanish Town had water up to the door handles and the underpasses at Gov Mansion and Acadian are both underwater.

It IS. 4 doors down on Chadsford our neighbors are already filling up a Uhaul to MOVE because they can’t keep doing this with all the water. In 2016 and now today. This just sucks so bad. It hurts my heart to see my dad deal with flooding again. :’( Sure it could be worse but why again?

Yep, we flooded in all the same places in Shenandoah today, and then some areas surrounding Shenandoah that never see water. I think the new homes being built on hills with drainage underneath them have something to do with it. Whatever the reason, it's not cool. Something needs to be done- and fast!

I wonder if the Spanish town flooding had anything to do with the wind pushing water over the levee? Just a thought.

what does a person do if you have no flood insurance bc you are not in a flood zone but you flooded today. You have about a foot of water.
Also, you are tight on cash to begin with
how does one navigate this process?

I saw that some people on General Forrest flooded as well. Where else got water besides Chadsford, do you know?

One navigates it like in 2016 when this happened to a TON of people. Even people WITH flood insurance are still recovering from the financial burden it took to fix their houses. If they’re even fully fixed. Maybe it’s not talked about much but it’s VERY rough.

You are semi-fuqed because most homeowners insurance, if not all, won't cover flooding from a natural disaster if you will. We've been trying to decide whether to keep the flood insurance since we were in Shenandoah, but after today, I'm thinking we will be hanging on to it, and our area didn't flood as bad and drained quickly. Assuming that the rates don't continue to sky rocket.

After 2016 how does anyone in BR not have flood insurance?

I drove in it this morning. I've only seen rain that heavy one other time in my life.
Flash flood from downpour drains off quickly after. 2016 was accumulated waters overflowing all possible drainage for a week
