Last week, someone posted on FB a "cute" story about how she was taking her 2 y.o to daycare on her way to work and on habit, turned down the road which would take her straight to work. Her daughter spoke up and said, "Mommy, you're going the wrong way!"

Most of the comments were LOLs or people saying how smart the kid was to notice, but all I could think about was the stories like this, and what could have happened if the kid was asleep and didn't make the mom realize before it was too late. Yeah, it's likely that Mom would've noticed anyway, but who knows?

I get a sick feeling in my stomach when I read these. These are some of the saddest & most tragic stories I can imagine.

Nothing more needs to be said. You clearly don't love your child, are unfit to parent, and should be put to death and/or sterilized. The OT has spoken.

When my daughter was born I began a habit of putting my laptop in the backseat of my truck every morning. Like many here I seldom take my children to school/daycare, and most mornings go immediately into autopilot once I leave for work. It has become a habit now and putting my laptop and work accessories has become habitual. About a year ago my wife had to be in work earlier than usual so I had to take the kids to daycare. I got into my truck but as soon as I was about 2 miles from home I got a call from work and my mind switched to auto-pilot. I made it about 5 miles down the road before I thought to check for my laptop at a stoplight because my routine was different. When I turned around to see two kids asleep in their seats my heart stopped. I turned around and took them to daycare. I would have seen them when I went to grab my laptop, but to think how close of a call that was, was enough to shake me up for the rest of the day. The unfortunate nature of our automated life is for our brains to coast through the mundane things like our morning commutes. Do something to make sure that where your kids sit is somewhere you look everyday when you get to your destination. Put your work bag, lunch, laptop, something there so you always check.

Ugh...that's a sobering experience.

I guess the best thing any parent can do is to accept the fact that it is possible to overlook your child.

At least then, you take precautions (like placing a laptop or lunch in the back).

If you are so damn certain that it would/could never happen to you -- then you are at a greater risk of it actually happening.

My wife and I had a rule when our kids were that age which was never put the car seat behind the driver's seat. Always put them behind the passenger side with something important like her purse on the backseat.

no criminal charges for father that left his 8 month old in hot car

quote:

The East Baton Rouge Coroner's office determined Mercer's daughter's death to be accidental. According to Moore, Mercer's acceidental actions are not grounds to be criminally charged. "The subsequent death of his eight month old daughter, Raylee, has been determined to be accidental, and his own acts have been determined as not rising to the required standard of criminal negligence for a criminal prosecution charge of negligence homicide," Moore released in a statement. The District Attorney's office examined and evaluated evidence collected by Baton Rouge Police as well as the East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office. Members of Mercer's family also met with Moore before a decision was made. "By their accounts as well as accounts from others, Marvin Mercer is a loving father, husband and role model to youth in the Baton Rouge area," Moore stated.

When I read posts like this, it makes me think of the Family Guy episode where Brian becomes a father.
