Survive and have fun at practice. He needs to learn how to run bases if he wants to play, but they only work on that during portions of practice.
Is this a bad team where no one will care or a competitive team where mistakes will be noticed?

Lol, then they’re just fricking with him then.
His friends play…and convinced him to go to tryouts…he ran a pair of 6.6 60’s and the coach told him he could run bases. He’ll either figure it out by the spring or he won’t. No biggie.
He’s never owned a glove or a bat, but they put him with the outfielders at practice and he’s clearly struggling with the physics of baseball.
If he can’t help the team in the spring then he simply won’t play. These coaches are good.

Is he left handed or right handed?
If he in fact ran a 6.6 and is right handed and can learn to catch a fly ball I would assume he'd play CF..not sure what kind of arm he has though

fricking noodle. He will not play in the field for this team ever.
He will only run bases…and only if he can show skill. This is a no joke program, so he wants to show improvement in all regards…and show he’s trying his arse off and will be able to help them win…
He loves their workouts compared to football.

He’s 17 and the ‘throwing the baseball with dad’ ship has sailed.
He’d watch YouTube videos though.

Specifically catching fly balls
Good tip I remember learning way back when I played.
If the ball off the bat goes over the bill of his hat and out of sight, get back quick. If it stays in sight under his bill it will land in front of him.
Not sure if this applies to flatbills though

He's already got offers from 5 sec schools as a baseball kid. Just needs to polish up the basics like hitting, throwing, catching and running the bases

Yea, most of his friends play baseball. They talked him into pinch running, so he went out to tryouts for that. Impressed the coaches with speed enough to get through the first hurdle. Now he’s at full baseball practice every day without having ever played.
Told me this morning that he’s struggling catching fly balls in the outfield, since that’s where they have him.

Couldn't happen to Tre' Morgan

If I was him I would do nothing but practice baserunning every day. Reading moves from RHP/LHP from 1b/2b is a primary place to start. He will need a live pitcher or 2 to who can work live pick off moves and a catcher with a decent arm. Time himself on these. Work reading the ball off the bat and getting jumps going 1st to 3rd. Unless he's on a podunk team he won't sniff and actual at bat or play the field at all. He has zero chance of hitting quality HS pitching if he's never played baseball and he's 17 years old already. Likely interested as a PR only.

for pop flys, is he scared or having trouble judging?
because if its judging...yea he just needs lots and lots of reps.

Maybe see if there is a 14u team practicing close by who will let him work in as a baserunner.
