Is the hinge broken in well to allow it to close easily? It seems like a combination of not enough pocket and not closing quickly enough.

Take some leather conditioner, lather it up, place a ball in the pocket, wrap some knee high socks tight af around the pocket, stuff in a pillowcase, and stuff it in the dryer on high for an hour. It'll form that pocket and supple that leather quick, if it's still too "slick" try rubbing dirt over the inside

It’s well broken in for his hand size. I use my same Rawlings glove from high school, and the leather on his glove is more slick than the leather on mine. He does close the glove too early sometimes. I’m not saying it’s all the glove. But I thought it was weird that the ball was also popping out some when I used it. I don’t have that problem with my glove, but granted, my glove is larger for my hand.

At home with me and his 3 kids. He played soccer. I played softball and basketball. He teaches our kids to shoot guns and blow shite up with firecrackers. I do the baseball.

Buy him a soccer glove.

Without seeing it for myself, I really think it's lacking pocket more than you realize. Does he play infield or outfield?

Both. He’s 9 and plays Little League. Fair play rules put him all over the place.

Rub dirt in the pocket. Keep doing that, it will dull the slick leather.
Dip spit works too.
You can also get saddle soap. That’ll make it stick.
Remember it’s all a process. Just keep working the glove. Sounds like it’s not ready, thus the ball sliding out.

I always used the largest glove I could find. Ended up with one called Big Daddy. Believe a fellow coach stole it.

I bought my 9-year-old a good leather Rawlings baseball glove a year ago. It’s well broken in now,"
Well broken in now for a kid that plays part of a year? That's hard to believe for me. Fully breaking -in takes longer for a glove in part- time use. Forget the slick surface angle. The glove isn't fully broken in yet and the pocket isn't formed well enough. Glove should never be stored without a ball in the pocket or web. Oil it up often. Use two hands on fly balls-that's a small hand in that glove and it needs help closing the glove. Good luck to your "future golden glove." Tell him to have fun.

For a new glove I'd first worry about forming the pocket then using a low grit sandpaper to get all the shine and useless shite off it from the retailer. Are you sure you're using the right glove? If you're trying to use an outfielders glove on the infield - you're gonna have a bad time with grounders.

My glove spent every night, its first few years, with a ball in the pocket and stuck between my mattresses.
Overtime, it became a much better glove.

This is not a good look, Coach Johnson, just hire Javi.

It’s a poor craftsman who blames his tools.

Leave a ball wrapped up in the pocket nightly after using some glove oil/conditioner. It will form a better pocket and less issues with it popping out.
