Well unlike MOPAR and Ford, the Vin does not specify the engine/ options. You can restamp blocks, forge paperwork, etc. It's a known problem in the Corvette community.
Yeah, I get that. However I thought they had the factory records where one could cross reference the VIN. The Pontiac guys can get the full list of options their car was produced with for instance.
Olds not so much as the records were destroyed. Unless it was sold in Canada as they do have those. In 72 GM put the engine code in the VIN so it's much easier with those. A 72 W30 is an X code for instance.
Apparently Chevy is the same?

Maybe I can add more to what BBS posted.
When the Corvette plant was moved from St Louis to Bowling Green, the records for the cars were destroyed by fire. Intentional or not is debated.
The VIN on the early corvettes were pretty simple.
1st number-Chevrolet Division
2nd-Model (Corvette)
3rd-Engine, 4,6,8 Not the specific engine 327,350,etc.
4-5 Body Style
6th- Production year.
7th (Letter)- Plant
Remaining was the sequence serial number
That's why GM will not issue repo window stickers and other documentation from the old Plant records. They don't know and don't want to be drawn into a controversy. So to identify what a particular car came with can be tricky. Some tank stickers and production orders have been reproduced so well that are very difficult to verify. And, that is using the old IBM Dot Matrix Printers.

Yeah no such luck with Chevrolet. All the Vin on early Chevys tell you is the Make, model, body style, production number, and plant produced. As traveler said, the fire has caused a a lot of documentation issues.

Ok, so the same as Olds then. Those were destroyed in a fire at the Lansing plant back in the 70's. All the W cars were built in Lansing so no records.
And yes, I've heard of the reproduced, aged build sheets and such. Piles of money make people do things. Especially when all it takes is a piece of paper and buying some parts.
Interestingly, in talking to an Olds engineer years ago, the build sheets were not even supposed to go in the cars. So it's a crap shoot if the car ever had one at delivery in the first place. And if it was just laying in the car it got tossed during dealer prep.
