Most likely the case.
I know when BJ statteed 20years ago they just to verify the authenticity of the cars. Now it's so many of them it's buyer beware. My father has been 3-4 times buying and selling and said many cars look a lot worse in person (some are just as nice mind you). Sid many are 6 foers that look like show cars on TV.

The LS motors and modern tranny just makes classics so much more [pleasurable to drive. Only drawback is the sound, that cannot be replicated.

Totally agree. There are so many fake-originals that it really takes a good eye to weed some of them out. They are that good. Even the paperwork has been faked with original printing that requires a second and third look.
How many actual ZL-1's exist now?

Speaking of non matching motors, they showed a Vette earlier that has a sign on the windshield "Numbers matching restoration block". 
I lot of linguistic gymnastics to say restamped block.

How many actual ZL-1's exist now?
I remember going to Bloomington several years back and they had more '67 L88 Corvettes on display than were built by GM.
Pro Team Corvette is notorious for "building" these rare corvettes and re-stamping blocks. I would NEVER own a car from them.

For years it was claimed only 2 ZL1 Vettes were built then someone came along claiming to have a third. Anything come of that?
Frankly, when you said ZL1 I thought of the Camaros as they built 69 of those. Forgot about the Vettes.
Any of those cars had better have some pretty airtight ownership history. A fresh "find" coming on the scene will be gone over with a fine tooth comb, including paperwork.
There are enough well known guys, that know all the other guys, that have these cars faking one would be difficult.
