Are you saying it just looks better to say it's something more legit or not say anything at all rather than the mil thing? Not sure what your beef is. But fwiw that is IMO an oddball reason; dude must really like his MIL.

The only reason I'd stay up late for my MIL is if I was hiding her body.

The worst excuse I ever gave for not coming in and not calling in to work was that I slept in til 5pm. It was actually the truth too.

Thats my point. There is sort of an "unwritten rule" that you don't leave other people "hanging" by calling in and saying you will not be in because you went out the night before and got drunk off your arse or you need to catch up on sleep, it is just better to say a white lie like "I must have caught some type of stomach virus overnight".

In the big scheme of things it doesn't matter I guess, but its more of the idea of "I stayed up talking with my wife and mother-in-law".

I can't understand how it's any of your business what he called in for if the employer is ok with it. And while it does seem sorta weak, it's better than lying.

i think the first half of this sentence is the issue at hand, as long as the below sentence is actually true

quote:

who has to finish his part of a project before it can move on calls into work to say he will not be coming in today

if he were deathly ill, id consider the situation different than just not feeling like coming.

That's the thing. Its an excuse that you don't really expect to hear. The worst thing that will come of this is me posting more than average, on the board today, but in theory its just the idea of it all.

Does the project have a deadline that he is pushing back, making others job more difficult due to lost time, or forcing more work on others to carry his weight? If no to all of these; who cares. That dude may be going through some rough patch with his wife and is talking things out with his MIL. Never know what people have going on in their personal lives.

Damn man, what time did you go to sleep?

If you ever go to lunch and for whatever reason you really don't want to go back to work, tell the boss you think the oysters you ate at lunch must have been bad because your stomach is really messed up. You can only use it once per boss, but its an excuse that is specific and not just the run of the mill "I dont feel good".

For a Louisiana state government employee, yes.

It just pushes things back a day. Things are ahead of schedule, if it wasn't I doubt he would have called in and I get all of that, I guess its more about the excuse. And that's a good point about him maybe going through a rough patch, but if I had to bet, this particular guy was probably talking and talking and lost track of time.

I once called in to work and simply said "I can't make it today because I'm in the country" when my employer asked what that meant I pretended to have a bad cell connection and hung up.

6am, supposed to go in at 7

I had a buddy from high school who lives out out of town drop by around 11 and we proceeded to crush a 24-pack of PBR and a couple fifths of cheap liquor over the next 7 hours. Figured I would rest my eyes for 30 minutes before heading to work and that little nap turned into 11 hours

Sounds like you're mad/jealous that this guy has the balls and character to tell the truth and you don't.

In a situation like that its probably best to just stay up.. If you would have only rested for 30 mins you would have probably felt worse than you did before you fell asleep. But, yeah... I guess things like that happen from time to time. If you put work ahead of everything then I guess there will come a time when you would regret not taking the opportunities to do the things like.. hang out with old friends, etc.

I was joking It is about luck of the draw, but to be fair, there is a little bit of strategy involved.
