I think it's safe to say had a Confederate general said this, instead of Sherman, and burned down Philadelphia and ravaged the lands in route, he'd be condemned as a heinous criminal along with the entire Confederate state and army. Not saying Sherman was wrong per se, but just an observation of how bias tends to impact how we view what is and isn't moral or justified in times of war.
