Axe-wielding man attacks BRPD officer, steals police cruiser, chase ensues

After the attack, authorities tracked and located Deandre James Trahan, 41, driving the stolen police cruiser in Port Allen, and following a short pursuit he was apprehended, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.
The axe was still in the car when Trahan was captured, McKneely said.
The 29-year-old Baton Rouge police officer, a three-year veteran of the force, suffered moderate injuries in the attack, McKneely said, but he was not struck with the axe.
Trahan, of 811 W. Garfield St., was booked Friday into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of armed robbery and criminal damage to property, McKneely said.
Additional counts could follow as the investigation into the incident continues, McKneely said.
