So the average height is about 5'9'', weight 195, but avg waist is 39.7? How in the hell does that add up?

i'd like to see the median for this kind of analysis, average's tend to be skewed.

Also I wish it was broken down by age.

Because your pants waist size isn't the same as your actual waist size. I wear 32 or 33 inch pants waist but my actual waist is like a 35 or 36.

And it's not that pants sizes are off, it's that your actual waist is higher than where you wear your pants.

I am taller than the average height, but I have less weight and less waist circumference than the average. Yay me!

Or they're full of shite.

6'+ with a 30 inch waist is TINY. These are the kind of people you tell to eat a sandwich. I'm 70-71 inches, weigh 160 soaking wet and wear a 31 or 32 depending on the brand.

Exactly.

I had a 30 inch waist in high school and everybody from class mates to extended family usually had a remark about "skin and bones" and how I needed "to eat more".

Now, a 32 inch waist is pretty easy to maintain as long as you bypass McDonald's and friends and avoid the soft drink aisle in the grocery store.

Reason being, threads like this draw people to post who are taller and thinner. You aren't going to get a lot of 5'-5" 300 lb. guys responding.

Not just that ,but most of the posters here are in their late teens/ early 20's(College age). Those waist will expand & pounds creep on.

It's interesting that the average waist is 40 inches, yet everywhere I shop the majority of the pants are 32, 34, or 36.

This.

Waist circumference(not pant size) is measured around the navel & not the 'hips' were most wear their pants.

One can wear 36 inch pants with a 42 inch gut hanging over the belt.

Yeah, I'm assuming most people are just listing their pants/shorts as their waist size, which isn't accurate. I certainly have no idea what my waist size actually is. I wear a 32 or 34, depending on the brand and inseam, but that doesn't mean I have a 32 or 34 inch waist, necessarily.

Fwiw, I wear size 33 waist pants, but my waist is actually just under 36" measured with a tape. Clothes manufacturers started making sizes bigger than they were labelled in the 90s

71
185
36" actual waist measurement where I wear my pants
