Wow, very sad.
At some point some judge will make an example of one of these kids that do this shite. Lock them up for 5+ years yr something. This hazing shite is out of control when it involves alcohol like this.
If the rumor mentioned before that they punished him to drink everclear. Then someone needs to be locked up for a awhile.

Meh. I imagine for someone going out of state for school, it's the best way to meet new people.
I sort of agree, but there's plenty of other clubs/organizations you can join that don't encourage drinking yourself to death. Hell now with Social Media, you can find a group for anything in your area in 5 minutes.

Is that how you found your Furry Brethren?

Ben Wynne was an sae. They got kicked off that year. Maybe 98?

Neither was I. The only "hazing" we had to do were non-violent things like guarding the tailgating set up overnight, giving actives rides whenever, cleaning the house. We were never forced to drink alcohol or any of the other absurd other fraternities do. It actually made the pledge class closer and bond in all of these times. That is effective "hazing."
Same here. My best memory was my pledge class being given several tarps, a couple (big) cans of beans with no can opener, and a cooler of beer. We were blindfolded and dropped in the woods and spent the night having a hell of a time. Never did get those damn beans open
We found out the next day a couple of the brothers had parked their car not far away and stayed the night in it to keep an eye on us.

ETA: and by "group punishment" I mean disbanding the greek system. No issues with removing the offending fraternity from campus and banning them for life.
Hazing is the problem. It should be dealt with swiftly. I agree that punishing the entire Greek community is dumb, but hazing should be policed with a heavy hand IMO.

There ain't more of a rush than fricking a chick dressed as a kitten from behind. Eat me.
There's plenty of non dorky activities to do in college that will get you laid plenty.

The problem with these fraternities is you give a bunch of 20 year old kids some sort of power for the first time in their adult life and a lot of them don't know how to handle it. This is the result

Getting your greek letters tattoed on your ankle was a thing for a while when I was an undergrad. Glad I didn't fall for it. I thought it was cool at the time. Now, not so much.
Ya, ours was to have our crest tattooed on the inner ankle (so it could be covered by socks for professional appearance reasons). Also glad I didn't do it.
When I was active from 00-05 this was considered bad luck. Guys that got it done ended up being kicked out for one reason or another

I heard several guys were lined up and forced to chug ever clear till they were sick, apparently from failing some sort of "test" (rumors)

I agree 100%. Hazing should be a death sentence to any chapter who participates in it, regardless of whether or not a death occurs.

I wouldn't say it isn't because they don't do what the actives say. Normally the dude is just generally hated by everyone. Might the kid is a douche or he tried to join a frat with a bunch of douches.
In my day, everyone we dropped one it was bc the kid was just hated and no amount of chances to be cooler was going to make this kid fit in. Probably anywhere. You have to be a serious tool 90% of the time to not make it

There are benefits, no doubt, but being hazed shouldn't be a minimum requirement.
I joined the Kiwanis Club when I worked in a different city. They didn't abuse me just so we could be friends.

Ya some people take it way too seriously.

If that is true then they are idiots
Posted on 9/14/17 at 5:26 pm to jmarto1
This entire thing is horrifying. This goes far beyond any hazing I've heard of. The actives that did this knew this could really screw the kid up and they did it anyway out of spite. They probably didn't consider that the kid could actually die, but that's not an excuse
